When People IRL Tell Me They Read My Blog

Sometimes I can be a total dweeb bordering on obnoxious about my blog. In my defense, I'm physically! unable! to put a stopper on my constant shutter-clicking (pics or it didn't happen, amirite?) or blog stalk talk. People are nice enough to listen to me ramble on and on about a new blog crush or winning a giveaway or sponsorships, but when these very people come up to me and say the dreaded,

"Hey! I read your blog, I really like it!"
I freeze up.

Like this.
And then it's...

Oh. That's really embarrassing.

Did you really? Sorry!

Thanks! .... (awkward silence)

Oh wow, thank you. Sorry it's stupid.

Wait, how did you find it?!

{Maybe because I leave it up on all the house's desktops. Or because I talk about it always.}

Then, they're usually (understandably) curious. There's been a recent increase in IRL people reading or looking at my blog (...hi, guys.) because of all my friends and family who want to keep up with my travels, my friends who are traveling with me and who want to look at their mugs (funnily enough, I very much so have abandoned posting pictures on my personal FB, and they have to resort to coming to my blog to save any pictures they want - did I do this intentionally? maybe.), and their friends and family who want to see what they are up to. This results in conversations like above happening. After the initial courtesy "I like your blog!" it's...

What do you usually blog about? When you're not traveling?

And I do a nervous little titter -
Stupid things.

What I wear, what I eat, what I do, what I think.

So basically, really stupid things. It's whatever.

I don't really know. It's a lot of rambling.

If they're smart, they'll leave it at that and we'll move on to conversation that's more in... mutual territory. But sometimes, they'll ask me more about how blogworld works and how did I get into it? How much time goes into it? Aren't you scared of psychos? We'll get into this really intense me-going-blah-blah-blah discussion and they'll keep feeding me lines like "this really is so cool!" "you're good at it!"

And by the end, I'm all...
I'm blog world celebrity.

You're lucky to know me.

If you're nice to me, maybe I'll make you blog famous.

They'll laugh like I'm joking, and that's usually the end of the talk.

But in the future, after every single little non-routine thing you do, it's going to be,

Are you going to blog about this?

Is this going on the blog?

...

OBVIOUSLY IT IS.

  1. I hear you loud and clear! I get so awkward when I know a friend or family member has revealed to me they've read my blog for the first time. The world of blogging, it's interesting on so many levels, but it's something I love!

  2. Hah! I love this! It's so true. I'm always so surprised when people say they read it.

  4. Hahaha I so agree. What's almost worse is that I've heard of a lot of people who tell me that they've gone back and "stalked my blog" and read something like fifty posts! It's flattering but also soooooo weird when I think of how old some of my posts are.

  5. YES. Everything about this post is totally spot on. It's even worse because I'm in a sorority with hundreds of other girls. I'll never forget when our president (and casual friend of mine) came up to me and was like, "Hey, I've been meaning to tell you that I really like your blog! Me and so-so were reading it and we both LOVED (insert a post title). You are a really talented writer!" I was blown away. That was the first IRL person who has ever read my blog without my knowledge...consent...something. Haha. Usually the IRL people who read my blog were people I knew were already reading it like parents and close friends (and even they weren't reading it all that often anyways). That encounter was slightly terrifying, but also a huge compliment to me. It made me more aware of things I were posting and it made me remember that DUH, EVERYONE CAN READ THIS EVEN WITHOUT YOU KNOWING. Haha. I mean I knew that, but it hadn't ever really sunk it. Maybe it's scary because you can be different versions of yourself in different situations, and maybe it's a little terrifying that a friends that only knows you in one way can have access to this other side of yourself. Just some thoughts!

    Excellent post, my friend.

  7. haha awesome description ! This will never happen to me ! I keep my blog a secret between me, the blogosphere and the rest of the world! Somehow I don"t feel comfortable knowing my collegues or some family members would get to know pieces of me that are extremely private... Maybe one day ! ;-) xx Sandrine

  8. New to your blog (found you thru Back East Blonde) and I have to say, this is hilarious. I'm loving your blog!

And I get super awkward when people tell me they read my blog. I'm just like, "Oh haha...cool. I guess." and then change the subject.

I'm also (very) guilty of starting many a sentence with, "So I was reading this blog today, and....." Oh well.

  9. When I moved back to Blogger and created a whole new blog, I was determined not to share it with my friends and family. I do make accidentally comments that I do have a blog but hopefully they don't catch on. It's not like I trash talk anyone on my blog but from past experiences, I've chose to keep my blog private from RL.

  10. i have the habit of talking down about myself or my blog when people ask about it, when really i don't think we should be embarrassed by what we write about!

  11. Haha oh yes! I haven't shared my blog with anyone suuuuuper close to me but I'm starting to share it with acquaintances and then hopefully I'll get over my silly, irrational fear of people judging me by what I write...or something like that ;) I do love your blog though! It is gooooold. You're the best!

  14. Hahaha this was just brilliant! I just freeze up and get super awkward when this happens. If it's a friend, I can handle it. If it's a "stranger", things just go downhill lol

  15. hahahah right there with you! I get solo awkward! and even worse when my mom tries to tell people about my blog in front of me! It's weird that we'd rather complete strangers know our day to day lives and happenings than people we know IRL
