Laugh With Me

Laugh With Me
Laugh With Me

Ello, Captain Jack Sparrow

Since yesterday we talked about how I met the band, Parachute,
I thought it only proper that I continue the theme of meeting celebrities.
Today, I'm telling you about how my friends and I met Johnny Depp freshman year.
Well. Almost.

If you look closely at the picture, you'll realize... that man is not actually Johnny Depp.

Could've Did fooled me.
--

The four of us are lazing about in my freshman dorm room. Friend A walks by, peeks his head in, and says "hey, Johnny Depp's on campus." WHAM. Cassandra sits up so quickly that she smacks her head on the wardrobe behind her. "WHAT?!"

The four of us look at each other, at a complete loss of what to do. My phone vibrates. I pick up. "Hi, we just saw Johnny Depp walking towards the campus bookstore with his family!" Another friend.

At once, Karen*, Cassandra*, Joan* and I* sprint outside, screaming and shushing each other as we ran towards the bookstore. It takes us maybe 2 minutes.

Because Cassandra and Joan don't have shoes on, Karen and I decide to go inside and scope out the situation. The two of us walk inside, look up, and bam! There he is, surrounded by his family, with a fedora hanging really low on his face, walking down the stairs. There's a little boy with him, one who looks to be about the same age as Johnny Depp's son. Without a word, Karen and I rush back outside.

"It's him, it's him, it's him, it's him, it's him!!"

"I made eye contact with him. He's onto us!" Karen shrieks.

The four of us wait outside the bookstore, deliberating over how to go up to him and kindly ask for a picture. We see a couple of friends walk by suspiciously, probably also on the lookout for him, and intentionally direct them away from the bookstore. (Note: karma sucks.)

Finally, we see Johnny Depp leaving the bookstore and he's walking away quickly with his family. "Shoot," we whisper. "He doesn't want to be bothered." And I'm telling you, people, that this is the most stalker-ish, creepy thing I've ever done. We see that he's heading towards the Quad, so we circle around a separate path that we know will get us to the Quad before him. Everything's planned out. We'd apologize, tell him we're big fans, take a picture, and leave. At last, we see him coming around the corner and the four of us close in on him. As we're nearing him, all of a sudden, it hits us all at the same time:
He isn't Johnny Depp.

But it's really obvious that we are approaching him, so my friend blurts out in a state of panic,

"Hi, could we get a picture with you?"

He looks at us. "Uh... yeah, but you guys know I'm not Johnny Depp, right?"

"...yeah. Sorry. Uh, could we still take a picture anyway?"

MORTIFICATION.

"Welcome to Stanford, by the way. Are you guys just visiting?" We asked, trying to make conversation.

"... I actually graduated from Stanford a few years ago. I'm just showing my family around."

And with that, we blushed, said goodbye, and booked it out of there. We posted the picture on Facebook, and to this day, many of our friends think we actually met him. We also swore that we would never share this story with anyone. (Uh... about that...)

But, yes. My friends and I stalked a random, ordinary man with his family, across half the campus. And made it extremely obvious to them. And asked for a picture after all of that.

*Names changed to protect the innocent

*Just kidding, nobody deserves to have their names changed in this story. We're all pathetic idiots and deserve to be humiliated.

Have you met any celebrities? Or any "celebrities"?

This story was inspired by this post by Karly Kim. Her cousin was a JD doppelganger too (a better one).

  15. This is hilarious. I'm so glad you decided to share the story! And I don't think I could ever trust myself to recognize a celebrity out and about...when I'm not wearing my glasses (most of the time) I can barely recognize my own husband...
